GREEN: Loudoun Brewing Company

Loudoun Brewing Company, which has been open for about two years, is an easy 10 minute walk away from Carroll Vineyards/Leesburg Vintner, but it’s kind of tucked back in a strip mall. Luckily for us, as we were trying to figure out where it was, the owner (who was loading up his car to head off to a beer competition) flagged us down and informed us that we looked thirsty and, my, wasn’t it fortunate that there happened to be a brewery RIGHT THERE.

Being in a strip mall, albeit one that looked a bit like a really long prefab house, the outside of the brewery wasn’t impressive. (But, hey, no barn!) The inside wasn’t impressive, either. They are bare bones – the main floor has a very small bar, a few tables, some fermentation tanks, and taps connected directly to a massive cooler. Ignore the aesthetics. The beer is damn good. The chalkboard menu lists snacks for $1, and based on some of the conversations going on around us, I assume those snacks consist entirely of pretzels. However, since there were takeout menus from a few local places sitting on the bar, I’m guessing you can bring outside food in with you so you have something to soak up all the booze.

They’re constantly changing their menu – as soon as one beer runs out, another one comes in to fill its place. They have eight taps, and their tastings are four for $10, so I’m sure you know what we did. The beers on our visit ranged from light, hoppy IPAs to thick, chocolatey stouts, so both Paul and I could find something to make us happy. My favorite was the European Holiday – our server told us that if we could figure out the spice and the fruit used in the beer, he’d pay for our tastings. We got the spice (after a very small hint), but no luck on the fruit. I won’t spoil it for you, but there’s no way in hell you’ll get it on your own.
